Purpose

I am a lesbian going into Mechanical Engineering. This blog is meant to do two things: a.) relieve the stress on myself from being closeted, and b.) to let people know that there are members of the LGBT community in engineering fields.

If you want to contact me, you can send an email to lgbt.engineer@gmail.com

LGBT Center on College Campuses

There was one time where I did visit the LGBT center at my school.  My roommate had gone out of town, and they were having a movie night.  This was about a year ago, and I haven't gone  back since. I've been meaning to, but that time I went I still felt like an outsider.  No one else seemed to understand what it was to be a minority in the engineering world twice over (one as a female, two as a lesbian).  They were nice people, but I just couldn't relate.  They all seem to be in fields where members of the LGBT community were accepted, whereas there is still seems to be a lot of stigma in engineering.

Engineering Stereotypes

One thing that I have noticed over the years is that many people automatically assume engineers are straight.  There have been a number of interviews or meetings where someone says "The guys there are the cream of the crop," or "Look at all the guys you have to choose over!"  Sometimes these phrases make me laugh, other times, not so much.  I am sure that other LGBT engineers have noticed this too.  In school I encounter it every day, I'm sure I will in the future.  Well, I need to go to class, have an awesome day!
